The Wish Faeries

The Dark Fae

Every story needs a challenge

The Dark Fae aren't monsters. They're the other side of the garden: groups who guard thorns, shadows, secrets and endings. When a wish disturbs something they look after, they push back, and the Wish Faeries have to think again. Light and dark live side by side here, and every action has a reaction.

Ten groups, twenty circles

Each Dark Fae group has two smaller circles, a book in the Dark Fae Library, and its own reason for crossing paths with the Wish Faeries.

Natural Forces · Protection

The Thorn Circle

  • Briar Witches
  • Nightshade Navigators
The challenge: They guard thorny barriers in the wild. When a wish would push through a hedge they protect, the Wish Faeries have to find a way that respects it.

Library book: Thorns of Fate: Curses of the Twisted Path

Shadow Forces · Obscurement

The Eclipse Enclave

  • Shadow Casters
  • Lunar Obscurers
The challenge: Like an eclipse sliding over the moon, they can dim wish magic until it's hard to see clearly.

Library book: Veil of the Eclipse: Shadows of Concealment

Reality Forces · Perception

The Mirage Makers

  • Illusion Weavers
  • Reality Distorters
The challenge: They paint illusions, so the Wish Faeries must stop and ask: is this wish really what it seems?

Library book: Mirrors of Deception: Reflections of the Unseen

Deep Forces · Ocean

The Abyssal Lords

  • Deep Sea Deviants
  • Leviathan's Court
The challenge: They rule the deepest parts of the sea, and step in when a wish might stir up old, sleeping powers.

Library book: Depths of Despair: Shadows of the Forgotten

Not yet sorted into a force

The Grimward Bound

  • Curse Crafters
  • Doom Spinners
The challenge: Their tangled bindings get in the way of wishes and leave the Wish Faeries with hard choices to think through.

Library book: Bindings of the Grimward: Covenants Concealed in Shadow

Natural Forces · Cycle

The Withering Wyld

  • Decay Bringers
  • Rot Keepers
The challenge: They look after natural endings, like autumn leaves returning to the soil. A wish to keep everything the same forever gives them a lot to say.

Library book: The Decay Diaries: Chronicles of Forgotten Ruin

Void Forces · Chaos

The Nether Nomads

  • Void Walkers
  • Chaos Weavers
The challenge: Wanderers of the in-between, whose muddle can unravel a wish so the Wish Faeries must patiently fix it.

Library book: Chronicles of the Void: Echoes from the Abyss

Spirit Forces · Protection

The Spectral Sentries

  • Ghost Guardians
  • Phantom Protectors
The challenge: They keep the spirit realm calm. If a wish stirs it up, the Wish Faeries sit down with them and talk it through.

Library book: Whispers of the Wraith: Echoes of the Vanished

Knowledge Forces · Secrets

The Cryptic Consortium

  • Secret Keepers
  • Forbidden Lore Masters
The challenge: They hold knowledge that is locked away for good reason. Some wishes ask to open it, and that's a big question.

Library book: The Forbidden Archives: Secrets Sealed by Shadow

Shadow Forces · Dealing

The Shadow Syndicate

  • Night Stalkers
  • Dusk Dealers
The challenge: They trade in secrets, while the Wish Faeries believe in honesty and openness. That difference makes for plenty of puzzles.

Library book: Shadows of Doubt: Veils of the Unseen

The three dark forces

Even the Dark Fae have rules

The Dark Fae gather into three great forces. Each one lives by its own limits, which is often how the Wish Faeries find a way through.

Natural Forces

Solitary and territorial.

  • Must keep nature's cycles turning
  • Can't stop things returning to the earth
  • Must honour nature

Void and Chaos Forces

Wandering and deep-dwelling.

  • Must keep a little chaos in the world
  • Can't create order

Shadow and Secrecy Forces

Secretive, trade-loving and spirit-bound.

  • Must keep secrets
  • Can't reveal the truth
  • Must honour spirits

A grown-up note: the Dark Fae give children a safe way to talk about why some wishes aren't simple, and how “no” or “not yet” can be the kind answer.
